Who
Yaron Askal. Montreal. I measure the websites of businesses in the same trade across Greater Montreal, Laval and the North Shore, and I fix our clients’ sites. Before Osture, I built my own websites and brought them up in Google. That is where I learned that half of what holds a local business back is invisible, free to fix, and nobody tells them.
Why someone other than you
You can look at your own website. You cannot look at every website in your trade: not in a comparable way, not every week, not with the same measurement taken on the same day. It is the one thing here you cannot do yourself, and it is exactly what Osture sells.
A figure about your site, on its own, means nothing. 3.4 seconds is neither good nor bad until you know that the median in your trade is 5.8.
What we measure today
Mostly Greater Montreal, plus a few pools in other regions. 4 loads per site: we keep the middle one and show the spread beside it.
Our two nets, and only one is used to sell
Our measurements are split in two, on purpose, because the two nets do not serve the same purpose:
- The tight net: our main trades, every week
Greater Montreal trades such as roofing, plumbing, flooring or kitchen cabinets, and the list grows as we open new ones. It is the only net used to sell, and it is where we look for depth: a median over 40 sites means something, a median over 8 means almost nothing.
- The wide net: other trades and other regions, every month
Trades such as dental clinics or notaries, and plumbing measured in Quebec City and Trois-Rivières too. Nobody in that net will ever be contacted. It exists for one reason: history cannot be caught up. A pool opened today is worth, in 2029, what no budget will be able to buy then.
Because it answers a reasonable question in advance: why measure people you sell nothing to? The answer is that a trade figure is only worth something if it was taken before we had a reason to want it. The regions and trades in the wide net are not published until their number of sites deserves it, and several are only just starting.
Our rules, the ones we hold ourselves to
- No figure we cannot measure twice the same way
Where a measurement could not be taken, we say so instead of inventing a plausible figure.
- The method is published in full
Our 27 checks are written down; you can verify every one of them with Google’s free tools. We measure and we fix: that is a real conflict of interest, and the only honest defence is that everything can be checked without us.
- Drops are shown like gains
A score that only ever rises is a manufactured score.
- Never legal advice
We check whether you are ready; your lawyer does the rest.
- Never a fake testimonial, never a borrowed logo
And never a “trusted by hundreds of businesses”.
askal.ca belongs to my family, and furrora.ca is a personal contact, in another trade. Both are measured like the others because that is where the method was developed, but they are removed from every published median. A trade benchmark must owe nothing to my own connections.
Two things that surprise everyone
Reviews on your own site will never give you stars
Since 2019, a review a business publishes about itself is treated as self-serving. The stars come from your Google Business Profile, never from your site. So we will never sell you a reviews page as a trick to climb in Google. We once found one at a business: it declared 4.9 from 39 reviews, and it did nothing at all. A testimonials page can help convince a visitor; it does nothing for your rank.
Trust is cross-checked
A machine trusts what agrees: the same name, the same address and the same number on your site, on your Google profile, and everywhere you are mentioned. One web address that answers, not two. Every contradiction is a small reason to show you a little less often, and that is why a fix is never just a line of code.
